Damage to inverse hybrid laminate structures: an analysis of shear strength test

Abstract Hybrid laminates with continuous fiber reinforcement, such as glass reinforced aluminium laminate (GLARE), aramid aluminum (ARALL), or carbon (CARALL), have been developed to increase the lightweight potential and fatigue resistance applied for aircraft structures. However, use of thermosetting matrices imposes material limitations regarding recycling, malleability, manufacturing-cycle times. The inverse hybrid approach is based on a fiber-reinforced thermoplastic matrix, in which metal insert integrated. For efficient manufacturing novel composites high-volume production processes, conventional sheet metal–forming methods applied. It helped reduce cycle times costs forming equipment compared currently used laminate-processing technologies. present study analyzes damage structures resulting from interlaminar shear strength test. tests were performed eight configurations, differed by type directions fibers polyamide matrix number polymer (FRP) layers laminates. Industrial computed tomography scanning electron microscopy analysis. Observed damages, including fiber–matrix debonding, breakages, fractures, interfacial delamination selected areas material, are strictly dependent configurations. FRP perpendicular bending axis presented better against fractures but their adhesion inserts was lower than parallel axis.
